OUR THIRD AGE: Title Page & Song

MALES AND FEMALES

‘I have given suck, and know
How tender ‘tis to love the babe that milks me.’
Macbeth, I, vii, 54-5

‘A society that does not keep its young men occupied
will pay a high price.’
Margaret Mead

This time the song is a very short children’s round. I think it captures the idea of coming to terms with what happens to people’s bodies after they die - as early humans were beginning to do.

Obviously they wouldn’t have had a song like this - using verbal language, imagination, mock fear and humour. And the adults would have been still trying to overcome their own fear, not yet ready to make it into a game for their children.

Have you seen the ghost of Tom?
Long white bones with the flesh all gone.
O - o - o - o - o - o - o - h,
Wouldn’t it be chilly with no skin on?

Been researching this topic for the last half hour and I've skimmed rather a great deal of similar articles to this, but this the most well-written. Pleasant and concise, ty.
